Progression through exams

Mark teaches pupils from complete beginner through to post Grade 8 professional diploma level. His outstanding examination record speaks for itself — he has personally prepared over 500 pupils for ABRSM and Trinity graded examinations, achieving an exceptional pass rate with approximately 50% of students receiving Distinctions, 40% Merit, and 10% Pass.

Whether you are working through the beginner grades or aiming for an advanced performance diploma, Mark provides structured, purposeful tuition that builds technical skill alongside genuine musical understanding.

"Mark imparts his knowledge in a calm, patient and encouraging manner. His approach is stimulating and innovative, and he consistently brings out the very best in his students."

Fun, focussed and flexible

Not everyone who takes up the piano wants to follow a formal exam syllabus — and that is absolutely fine. Mark is equally happy to work with adult beginners and hobby players who simply want to enjoy music for its own sake. Lessons can be tailored around your favourite pieces and musical interests, with a flexible approach that keeps things enjoyable and rewarding.

Extensive use of music software is made to create arrangements of pupil requested pieces as well as customised backing tracks and demo videos to go with these arrangements. This makes lessons much more engaging and is a wonderful way to build confidence and musical awareness. Pupils are able to record and save their chosen performances to play at home and these recordings build over the years into a valuable record of achievement.

"It is very rare to find someone who is such a gifted musician and also such a patient and encouraging teacher." — Mr A.J. (Adult beginner)

Benefits of playing the piano

Learning to play the piano delivers significant cognitive and emotional benefits for people of all ages. Research consistently shows that regular piano practice improves memory, concentration, and fine motor skills — and these effects are seen in children and adults alike.

Playing music has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, boost self-confidence, and provide a rewarding creative outlet. For children, musical training is closely linked to improved academic performance, particularly in mathematics and literacy.

Whether your goal is to master a favourite piece, achieve examination success, or simply enjoy a fulfilling new hobby, playing the piano is one of the most enriching activities you can undertake at any stage of life.
